Where Are Downloaded Instagram Reels Saved? (iPhone, Android, PC & Mac)

Downloaded a reel or photo but can’t find it? Here is exactly where every browser saves files, and how to move them into your photo gallery.

You pressed Download, the file finished, and now you can’t find it. Every browser saves files to a Downloads folder, not straight into your photo gallery, so reels and photos don’t appear where you expect. Here is where to look on each device, and how to move the files into Photos or Gallery.

iPhone and iPad

Safari (and Chrome for iOS) save downloads to the Files app:

  1. Open Files and tap Browse.
  2. Go to iCloud Drive → Downloads or On My iPhone → Downloads, depending on your Safari settings.
  3. Videos are named like creator-AbCdEf12345-hd-720p.mp4; photos end in -photo.jpg.

While a download is running, Safari shows a blue arrow in the address bar. Tap it and then the magnifying glass next to a file to jump straight to it.

Move it to the Photos app

  1. Open the file in Files.
  2. Tap the Share button.
  3. Choose Save Video (or Save Image for photos).

It now appears in Photos → Recents and can be edited, shared or backed up with iCloud Photos like any other video.

You can change where Safari saves files in Settings → Apps → Safari → Downloads.

Android

Chrome, Samsung Internet and Firefox save downloads to the phone’s Downloads folder:

  • Open the Files (or My Files) app and tap Downloads.
  • Or open Chrome, tap the ⋮ menu and choose Downloads.

Most gallery apps pick up the folder automatically: look for a Download album in Google Photos or Samsung Gallery. If the file doesn’t appear, open it once from the Files app; that usually prompts the gallery to index it.

Windows

Browsers save to This PC → Downloads by default (C:\Users\YourName\Downloads).

  • Press Ctrl + J in Chrome, Edge or Firefox to open the downloads list, then click Show in folder.
  • The Photos app and Windows Media Player open MP4 and JPG files directly; VLC is a good alternative for any format.

Mac

Safari, Chrome and Firefox save to the Downloads folder in your home directory, which also sits on the right of the Dock.

  • Press ⌥ + ⌘ + L in Safari to open the downloads list.
  • QuickTime Player plays the MP4. To add it to the Photos library, drag the file onto the Photos app.

Linux

Files go to ~/Downloads unless you have changed your browser settings. Any modern player, such as VLC, mpv or Totem, plays the MP4 without extra codecs.

Finding the right file quickly

IG Downloader names every file after the account and the post’s shortcode, so they are easy to search for:

Download Example file name
Reel or video creator-AbCdEf12345-hd-720p.mp4
Audio creator-AbCdEf12345-audio.m4a
Single photo creator-AbCdEf12345-photo.jpg
Carousel slide 3 creator-AbCdEf12345-3-photo.jpg

Type the creator’s name into your device’s search to find everything you saved from them.

Still can’t find it?

If nothing appears in Downloads, the download may not have finished. Paste the link into IG Downloader again and press the Download button next to the file you want. Download links are temporary, so an old link may have expired. The FAQ covers more troubleshooting steps.
