Instagram Reels Quality Explained: HD MP4, Audio and Photos

HD MP4, audio, photo or cover image? What each Instagram download option is, why reels come in 720p, and which file you should pick.

When you download from Instagram with IG Downloader you can get up to four kinds of file: an HD MP4, an Audio track, a Photo or a Cover image. This guide explains what each one is, why a downloaded reel is usually 720p even when the app looks sharper, and how big the files are.

Why Instagram keeps several versions of every post

Instagram serves billions of views a day to phones on every kind of connection. To keep playback smooth, each upload is re-encoded into a ladder of versions at different resolutions, and the player switches between them depending on your connection and screen.

For videos, most of those versions are video-only streams: picture without sound, with the soundtrack stored separately. The app stitches them together while it plays. Only one version is a complete MP4 file with picture and sound, and that is the one IG Downloader offers as the HD download, because it plays everywhere without any extra work.

The HD MP4: video with sound

Property Typical value
Resolution 720p (720 × 1280 for a vertical reel)
Video codec H.264
Audio codec AAC
Container MP4

H.264 video with AAC audio is the most widely compatible combination there is. The file plays on iPhone, Android, Windows, Mac, smart TVs and every common video editor without extra codecs.

Why not 1080p?

Instagram’s app may stream a reel at 1080p on a fast connection, but at that size it only stores video-only streams, often in the VP9 or AV1 codec. Saving one of those would give you a sharp picture with no sound, and many players and editors can’t open it. The 720p MP4 is the highest-quality version Instagram keeps as a single, complete file, so that is what you get.

On a phone screen the difference is hard to see: a vertical 720p video already has more pixels across than most phones show at normal viewing distance.

The audio track

The Audio option is the original AAC soundtrack in an M4A container, the same audio Instagram plays. It isn’t converted or re-encoded, so there is no quality loss. Typical bitrates are 64–128 kbps, which is plenty for speech and fine for casual music listening.

M4A plays natively on iPhone, Mac, Android and Windows, and imports straight into CapCut, Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve and Audacity. The Instagram Reels audio downloader lists the audio option first.

Photos at original size

For photo posts and carousel slides you get the largest version Instagram stores:

  • Most photos are 1080 pixels wide: 1080 × 1350 for portrait (4:5), 1080 × 1080 for square and 1080 × 566 for landscape posts.
  • Recent uploads are often stored larger, for example 2160 × 2700. IG Downloader always picks the biggest copy available and shows its size before you download.

Photos are passed through unchanged, so the JPG has exactly the quality Instagram delivers. A screenshot, by contrast, is limited to your screen size and usually includes cropping.

The cover image

Every video also has a cover image: the still frame Instagram shows in the grid and before the video starts. It is useful for thumbnails, presentations or a quick preview. Covers are smaller than photos, typically 640 to 1080 pixels wide.

Typical file sizes

Download 30-second reel 90-second reel
HD MP4 (720p) 3–6 MB 9–18 MB
Audio (M4A) 0.2–0.5 MB 0.7–1.4 MB
Photo (JPG) 0.3–5 MB per photo, depending on size

Which should you choose?

  • Watching later or sharing with a friend: HD MP4.
  • Music, a talk or a recipe you want to listen to: Audio.
  • Photo posts and carousels: Photo, slide by slide.
  • A thumbnail for notes or a presentation: Cover image.
